Mera Peak

Mera Peak is a mountain which lies in the Sagarmatha region of Nepal. At 6,476 meters it is classified as a trekking peak. The view from the summit is one of the finest in the Himalaya with five 8,000 m peaks visible: Mount Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Kangchenjunga, as well as other Himalayan peaks linked below. The standard route from the north involves high altitude glacier walking. The ease of reaching this elevation may be its biggest danger but good weather and snow conditions are, of course, necessary for safety and success. The west and south faces of the peak offer more difficult technical routes. Climbers will need to make use of crampons to make the ascent, will carry a long iceaxe for support, and will be roped to a guide across the glacier on summit day. First time users of these aids will be given instruction on their use below base camp. The ascent from the Mera La is gradual and sustained, before reaching a short, but straightforward climb up a 40 degree slope to Mera’s central summit. Note that the slightly higher North Summit is presently heavily crevasses and expeditions currently head for the Central Summit nearby (6461 m).
