The trek begins at the Makalu Base Camp, located at an altitude of 4,870m, within the Makalu Barun National Park, which was established in 1992. After a flight to Tumlingtar, trekkers make their way to the Arun river valley and then to Num.
Upon crossing Shipton La, a pass at 4,125m, trekkers reach Kalo Pokhari, the Barun river valley, where they get a close view of Makalu and Mount Chamlang. The Makalu Base Camp Trek takes trekkers to the most remote parts of Nepal, offering a classic trekking experience that reaches an altitude of 5,150m.
Although the region lacks modern facilities, the natural beauty and diversity of the surroundings are truly incredible. The Makalu Barun National Park is home to a rich biodiversity, hosting 3,000 species of flowering plants, 440 species of birds, and 75 species of mammals, including endangered species like the Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Musk Deer, Wild Boar, and Himalayan Thar (also known as the blue mountain goat).
